Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 4 Activity 1

DAY 4: INDIVIDUAL PURSUITS

Activity 1: Making a Racket [4 points]
Billie Jean KingVenus Williams, and Serena Williams are three exceptional, female tennis players. They are not only outstanding athletes and some of the best tennis players in the world, but they have fought for women to be recognised as equals to men in the game of tennis. Billie Jean King famously beat a male tennis player, Bobby Riggs, in 1973, to prove to the public that women could compete at any level in tennis.

For this activity, watch these videos about Serena and Venus Williams.
On your blog, tell us three things that you learned from watching these videos, as well as one thing you would still like to know.
3 Things I learned from watching these videos.
I Learned that Serena Williams is 1st highest paid women & Venus Williams is the 5 highest paid women.
I learned that Serena had a sister called Venus.
I learned that Serena is one of the top tennis players.
1 Thing I would like to know.
Are men and female paid the same amount of money when they join tournaments?

  1. Kia ora Lukas,

Me again, Georgia! Just trying to keep up with all your amazing blogs. You really are doing an awesome job. I really like how you are taking time to comment on your peers blogs. You are really motivating them to do their best and to keep continuing with their blogging over the holidays. You are definitely racking up points by doing this!

That’s amazing that Venus is also one of the top paid athletes in the world. The Williams sisters parents must be so proud of both of them. That is such an incredible achievement. I didn’t know these facts that you gave me so I googled a little more, like you did!

That is a really interesting question! Did you do teaser week? On teaser week we spoke about gender pay gaps and if you thought it was fair.
There’s actually a huge $60.7 million (NZD) difference between the highest-paid tennis players. Serena Williams has career winnings over $135 million (NZD) and Novak Djokovic career winnings of $199 millon (NZD). I got this of the website https://www.businessinsider.com.au/tennis-players-highest-paid-all-time-men-women-2017-1?r=US&IR=T check it out.

    Keep up the mahi!

    Cheers,
    Georgia

  2. Hey Lukas,
It is great to see you blogging. Just to let you know in 1 of the videos it says the highest paid male athlete was paid $100million, having 12 Grand Slams but Serena was paid $80million, having 23 Grand Slams, I don't think Men and Women get paid a fair amount of money!
    Keep it up!

    Laki
